If it is really clipping, you should see that in the waveforms as well.Hmm. Maybe you are zoomed way out? The 'size' of the waveforms will always tell you about relative levels but not much about absolute levels. In Pro Tools, the waveforms can be zoomed vertically as well as horizontally. Turning down the cue amp and raising the headphone amp might help, if this was it. Perhaps the channel fader or the master in the cue mixing app is clipping. The cue app? Weak headphone amp in the interface? etc etc Cheap crappy headphones? How is the sound when you play it back in the DAW at a moderate volume? IOW is the distortion recorded? Or is it possible that the distortion is in your monitoring setup? You need to gain-stage the monitoring setup as well. Some condenser mics will distort their internal electronics before the preamp distorts, but I have only had that happen with drums. But with 24 bits, you should not have to. You might record the song in "sections" and redo your settings in-between. So did you gainstage the preamp while you were singing "sexy and intimate"? Or did you gainstage the preamp while you were "yelling really loudly"? +20 dB is a lot. Look at channel 4 that XLR symbol is what you want to see. You're Going from Line Level out to Hi-Z input. RakanHave you looked in the Element Control Settings, This is probably the problem "Gold Tip XLR to 1/4 inch from PRE AMP XLR Output > to 1/4 inch Gold Tip Element 24 Input" You need Balanced Cable, Try XLR to XLR and set Element Control Settings to Line level. So I want to trouble shoot the problem.Īlso whats your feedback on my setup at home? My loud high notes have never been a problem in my past in any studio ive ever recorded out. I have been mixing for about a year now on my own as i am a recording artist not a sound engineer but lately decided to mix my own vocals. What is my problem guys? Do I need to return my gear and ask for new products?Īll input is appreciated. I tried switching the XLR to XLR cable on the mic and it still gives the same results.Īm i wiring the mic to pre amp to inferace correctly ? Keep in mind the recording wav's on pro tools are still so small maybe less then half of the maximum size. Now if i sing just a little loud even in a mid range octave right away i hear through my headphones distortion. Now if Im singing softly on the mic it sounds sexy and intimate.īut me personally my best octave in my vocal range is my highs. (Without the 20DB it doesnt hear my vocals through monitoring) Phantom Power and the +20DB switch from the PRE. So to think that is the problem will kill me ! The AKG c414 and the ART Digital MPA II Tube Pre are both BRAND NEW. Gold Tip XLR to 1/4 inch from PRE AMP XLR Output > to 1/4 inch Gold Tip Element 24 Input (Interface)Įlement connected to Mac Mini via thunderbolt connection. Standard Gold Tip XLR to XLR from MIC > PRE AMP Input Apogee Element 24 Interface via thunderbolt Connection AKG C414 Microphone Cardoid pattern used.ģ. I hope my conclusion is wrong and you guys can help me get my levels right !ġ. My conclusion: My Tube PRE AMP is fried (Just bought it 3 days ago) I searched up already many times for ways to trouble shoot the process but am still having problems understanding. Whatsup! I'm new here and hopefully i'm here to stay long term.
